This morning I had a knot of anxiety and stress in my gut. This isn’t usual for me. I’m one of the most easy-going people I know 🙂 But these are unchartered territories for me: single-family home ownership. And really, with any home you buy, your costs are always going to be at least 25% more, because you will want to renovate, decorate, and that costs money. I am thrifty, however. I have a sewing machine. I can make beautiful, function drapes. I can find attractive pieces at a thrift store, repaint them, and make them my own. And you’ve never know it only cost a few dollars.
But the sort of things we’re talking about right now–cabinets, counter tops, windows, basement doors….HOLY CRAP! A window installer just came to do an estimate and quoted us $14,300 for all 22 windows to be replaced. Expensive……..Less expensive than the first window installer that came the other day, at $15,500-ish, but still too much for us to stack down in one setting.
Personally, I think we need to just do the first level of the house, and also the cabinets. Later we can do the upstairs windows. We have to not spread ourselves so thin.
Priority #1: New Bilco basement door that will no longer leak.
Priority #2: Kitchen cabinets and may as well throw in a granite counter top, too.
Priority #3: New windows to keep out drafts, and plus, they are painted wood. Hopefully no lead!!
Once we get those things addressed, we can settle………………
