I Could Get Liposuction for THAT Cost!!

Do you know what $2,290 could buy you? How about liposuction for a flabby post-3-kids belly……or an upgraded MacBook Pro laptop…..Or, better yet, how about THREE new iPads? Hell, I could probably outfit our whole house with awesome thrift store scores for that amount!
But guess what we’ll be buying this week?

Yep…..a freakin’ pile of dirt!!

Um, yeah, so today I had a professional landscaper and waterproofer guy come to give me a quote on re-grading around the whole house. And the quote was $2,290!!

If you remember from my last post the other day, our basement was assaulted by torrential rain, and our yard looked like a swimming pool. We knew grading was a problem, but we waited, like fools. I mean, it’s intimidating getting quotes up in the thousands range, ya know?? So we stuck our heads in a hole and waited for that-moment-when-you-know-you-can’t-put-it-off-any-longer and now we’re finally biting the bullet. *GROAN*
Things got so bad that we had to put a tarp down over the really bad areas just to stop the rain from soaking into already-soaked soil.
Holy moly, that’s 3″ of water sitting next to our foundation! *gasp* No wonder the basement flooded! *smacking my forehead*
But when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade: our toddler loved playing in the puddles the next morning!

But then play-time was over and it was time for Mommy to scoop the water out with a make-shift bucket, since I couldn’t find a real bucket, nor was the shop vac a big enough capacity. UGH….

And that old rusty HVAC there (the one I refuse to replace until it breaks so that the Home Warranty company can do us the honors)? Well, we still need to call in an HVAC guy to come and remove the unit a day before the landscaper re-grades, and then have the HVAC guy re-connect the unit after the grading is done. That’s a whole separate quote.
(I’ll probably be able to get implants for what that quote will cost…..Well, maybe just the right one….LOL)

PROJECT: Reading Room
So…..We’ve been so busy putting out fires around the perimeter of our home, that I haven’t been able to put much time into the INSIDE of our home. I’ve been attempting to put together a reading room in what is “supposed” to be our formal living room (AKA: the room where traditional people lay white carpet and spend tons of money on plastic-wrapped furniture they never sit on just to fill empty space). And you know I’m not traditional what-so-evah.
You may recognize some of these pieces. I’ve sort of hodge-podged them all together into one space, but who cares–I like it.

My 5-year-old reading about fireworks in what will soon be our official Reading Room.

Such a large room– about 13′ x 20′. But the larger the room, the larger RUG you need!! And you know I don’t buy THOSE from thrift stores, huh? LOL So, it’s gonna take a minute to get THAT……

In order to get this room done, I need a nice HUGE rug, as well as a super-comfy place to sit, stretch out, etc. We also need a kids reading corner and a comfy place for them to sit.
It’s a work-in-progress……….We’re getting there, as soon as we take care of this grading headache! Bear with me!

But what I want to know is, what would YOU buy with $2,290??
(Because I know it wouldn’t be a pile of dirt, like me!)

  1. I do love blogging too, and I would love to do that full time…and refinishing furniture of course..it does take a lot of time, and I go to work sometimes with huge dark circle under my eyes..I love WordPress a lot, and after only two days on it, I can totally see an improvement on traffic..I get way more search engine traffic than before..so far is all worth it..and the stats are much better..

  2. Deny, oh wow, so you’re making the move to WordPress huh? I should look in to it as well. I’m using Blogger. I have switched from Feedburner to Aweber, though. It’s so much better for stat reasons! I love it. As for Better After, I saw a TON of traffic coming from there. I’m talking over 1000 page views a day, when I was only getting about 30? Ha! I’m now up to about 100-200 page loads a day. Not a lot, butuch more than where I was just a few months ago. Blogging takes soooo much time, am I love it sooo much, but to grow ‘my blog, along with completing projects, it takes me until the wee hours of the night and then I fall asleep at work the following day. Ha! Man, what I wouldn’t give to be a full-time blogger…..

  3. Wendy, you are so sweet 🙂 thanks for the compliments! Upcycling is definitely my passion! And I love your blog, because it really makes me stop and think about the little things in life that are really the BIG things! And OMG, you’re right!! That is a trip to Jamaica!! Ugh! I could scream!! And I just found out today that to disconnect and reconnect the HVAC for the regrading will cost about $500 – $600 more! Ouch!

  4. …I like your idea! this way you are killing two birds with one stone..Flat belly and upgraded basement! thats a win – win situation..I did see the feature as well, I got some decent traffic but nothing spectacular..I didnt get a chance to enjoy it yet because I was transferring my blog to WordPress all weekend and that just killed me…ufff, I am glad that I got that over with..

  5. First, I’m sorry you’re having to spend that much money on completely -not fun- projects. Second, the reading room is coming along nicely. You really do the best job at up-cycling out of anybody I’ve seen. Last, for two grand I’d take a vacation… Maybe Jamaica. Big, fruity drinks, white sand and blue water. 🙂

  6. Tracey, haha, I hate unpacking too!! We had boxes in out garage for a good year before we unpacked everything! Hope your mess in the garage isn’t too bad. Go check! Lol.

Johnson– I went to your blog to find your real name and couldn’t find it since I am checking via my phone and your full page didn’t come up! 🙂 holy crap you get a lot of comments on your blog! How do you do that! Give me your secret! And I totally understand your fears of homeownership because of stuff like this. Would be nice to pass the buck to someone else, namely a landlord! But, it’s simply like life of a home owner and you just have to keep a small fortune smuggled under your mattress for stuff like this, or maybe invest in a ski mask. Hahaha

  7. Tracey Bradshaw says:

Ouchies on the quote – we are getting new guttering and downpipes on the garage which wil hopefully rectify our flooding issues. We had torrential rain here last night and i have been too afraid to open the garage doors to assess the damage. Dillon has lifted most stuff up off the floor in the ‘flood zone’ so fingers crossed it’s not too bad.
If I had that much cash to splurge, I think I’d pay a professional organizer to come and finish my unpacking! Sick of boxes, boxes and more boxes! I swear if you leave a few boxes in a dark room together they have a bit of fun and start multiplying…

  8. HAHAHA, you’ve got a point there! But then again, maybe standing out on the corner begging for loose change with my flat sexy stomach, I might earn enough to buy a new house–one that is properly graded! HA!

P.S. I saw you featured on Better After!! Your striped desk! Did you see??? I know you’re getting 10M hits to your site now!

  9. I will chose the liposuction..lol..but then, you need a roof over your head and a place to hold all of those soon to be transform thrift store finds..so, then probably you should go with fixing the basement…
