When I was a kid, I hated my curly hair! I remember sitting in 5th grade behind a girl named Kari who had long, brunette hair, and I’d always have this urge to reach out and touch her hair (not that I ever did; I wasn’t that weird).
But I spent the first 12 years of my life looking like a member of the opposite sex. (Yes, folks, that’s really me. Go ahead. Snicker. I know you wanna).
I spent the following 10 years getting chemical relaxers to straighten out the curl.
But for the past 15 years, I have totally rocked and embraced my curly hair (annnnd looking more female, I’m happy to report). LOL
We should totally be celebrating our curly hair, especially has creative people!!
Because curly hair comes in handy when you’re a creative person. Here are at least 5 reasons why.
1. No one knows that you just woke up.
When you’ve got curly hair, guess what? People expect “unruly.” Unruly is actually pretty fashionable! So you can just roll out of bed, like this picture of me below, and go make a supply run for glitter, wood, or paint, and people think you’re totally having a great hair day. HA!
On one of my recently trips, I skipped doing my hair before a super-early flight and woke up nearly similar to this, and actually got a compliment on my hair in the airport bathroom! YIKES!! LOL
2. You can hold crafting supplies in your hair…and they won’t fall out!
I showed you this DIY bench with storage that I made recently.
See that thing in my hair?
Yes, folks, that’s a pencil.
Stuck right in the depths of frizz, locked in place, right where I always know it will be.
Just imagine all the other stuff curly girls can fit in there: paint brushes, drill bits, nuts, bolts… Maybe even hide the remote control from hubby–gasp! Hmmm….
3. You can just wash and go!
I often step outside my house with hair wetter than a dog caught in a thunderstorm.
(Is that a faux pas??)
But do you know how much time that saves us so that we can work on projects longer, instead of being tied to blow dryers and flat irons? A ton!
Plus, our hair looks best when it air dries.
In fact, mine was still a little wet when we got to the Amy Howard studio for our painting workshop last week! (Later, it was all puffy, but you can use your imagination for that one…).
4. You’ve got an instant Halloween costume.
For this past Halloween, I decided to rock this old vintage dress that I picked up 23 years ago (yes, 23 years!) at a thrift store after school when I was 15. But don’t let the picture fool you: I’m 25 pounds heavier and it rides up.
But the hair!
Straight girls have to buy Afro wigs.
Curly girls don’t. We can just get creative with it.
5. New things are invented just for us!
Straight hair is the default “one size fits all” hairstyle of the world, so us curly girls get all the cool stuff created for us: special creams…lotions…and even fun emojis
I chat with my friends a lot so it’s fun to have some curly girl emoji’s. My favorites are the fun GIF emojis!
How It Works
When you’re IM chatting or texting with friends, or sending an email, you just tap the little “World” icon (on the iPhone) and it will bring up the curly hair emojis. Copy and paste the one you want to use.
Let’s poke fun at my horrific basketball pic….LOL
You can use these emojis only in chat and email (although they only display in mobile email and in Mail applications, not within Gmail and Yahoo). Hopefully soon you’ll be able to use them on social media!
BONUS: 6. We can change it up!
I can’t help but add that as a creative curly girl, we totally have the ability to change up our hair.
While we love our curls one day, tomorrow we can rock the straight look. Then switch it back in a couple days. It’s easier to go from curly-to-straight vs. straight-to-curly!
So the next time you’re ready to rip your curls out in frustration, embrace your curls…. be proud of it….and go download the Dove Hair Love Your Curls emoji (in the App Store and Google Play Store)….and just have FUN with your curly hair!
