If there’s one thing I love doing on this blog it’s repurposing something old and discarded into something else.

Some call it “repurposing” but I like to think of it as “flexing your creativity muscle.”

I had binged on Project Runway and my absolute favorite episodes are their “unconventional” challenges, where they have to make beautiful garments out of the most unlikely thing.

So that’s what I had in mind when I saw this scrap piece of railing at the ReStore: I was going to make something cool from the most unlikely thing: Christmas DIY ornaments!

It was stuck in this pile of scrap wood.

I felt like a Project Runway designer–only, instead of making some gorgeous dress out of wood chips, I was going to make something to put in my house. LOL

I busted out my power drill and hollowed out the middle.

And then I said, “You know what would be really cool?? Not just to make DIY ornaments, but to make their own DIY ornaments keepsake box!

I still can’t believe I made this pretty little thing from scratch!!

I’m sort of like the “let’s-just-buy-boxed-cake” kind of girl. But I’m slowly becoming a “we-bakin’-this-from-scratch-yo!” kind of artist. It’s pretty exciting.

And it’s exciting to think of being able to make someone a DIY ornaments keepsake box.

I wanted to stencil the outside with snowflakes but guess who couldn’t find their stenciling materials?? ME <~~ the unorganized crafter/builder! So please excuse the lack of painted stencils! Those will come later!

But here are some other ideas on ways to embellish it:

  • Painted stencils on the front (snowflakes, “Happy Holidays,” etc.)
  • Writing a poem or the lyrics to your favorite holiday song on the inside doors.
  • Adding a decorative handle to the top so that you can carry it easily in and out of storage.
  • Adding hardware to the back and hanging it on your wall.
  • Making something like this to hang on the wall for your jewelry! 🙂

Plastic storage boxes. But a few years ago I was the happy recipient of a bounty of bubbly wrap pockets, about 5 inches by 8 inches that graphing calculators are shipped in. They’re perfect for putting fragile ornaments in for storage.

  2. Oh wow that is way cool – you really outdid yourself this time Serena !! WTG !!!!!
hahahaha where do I store my Christmas ornaments – in whatever crate, box or tub is available in whatever space is available and half way through the year spend hours reorganising them :)))

  3. OK….confession time for me. I have had my tree up all year going on the 2nd Christmas. But it is decorated to go with my equestrian decor in my house. It is all horse ornaments (with a little fox and barn decor added here and there) collected over the last 30 years. I rode western growing up but switched to English after college so I have some of both in my decor. I add to it all year as ornaments catch my eye. I only added Christmas balls last Christmas. The thought of taking all those ornaments down could put me in a ball on the floor … really!
I also rewrapped lights deeper in the prelit tree to add dimensionality to the tree when the lights are on. When I am feeling down, I plug it up and get Christmas joy anytime of the year. I store my kids ornaments (now 20 and 22) in their own separate labeled totes that will follow them when they leave for their own places. I have been updating my builder grade house since fall 2013. I had originally decorated with mostly white and had lime, yellow, blues, orange, purple, etc . pops of color when the kids were coming up. Then I decided to update throughout the house and paint and change to more traditional colors that I could fit in with my horse decor and started switching over. I have memorials to my last horse and always have at least one saddle on a custom stand in my family room. I have had so much fun shopping and DIYing to coordinate everything Horsey! Craigs List , DIY, and thrifting are part of the process since money is always tight because we still have one horse and 20 year old daughter daughter (also loves horses and in college) to provide for. I have riding boots in the family room that will have greenery added for Christmas and I incorporate English tack when I can. e.g. I have an English stirrup ( it is new, ladies. Just adding that for all non-horsey people who might think I used an old one. Which would still be fine if cleaned up and run thru the dishwasher) that holds the hand towel in the master bath. I used all silver hardware in that bath just so I could fit my stirrup in. I have always loved horses. I came out of the womb that way so I am loving my equine decorating. My bedroom was always equestrian themed growing up.

I love following fellow thrifters and DIYs like Serena who inspire all of us bargain huntresses out here to go for it. I have taken out countertops, vanitys, put tile in, (with Dad’s help of course) etc. in spite of being a perfectionist who is fearful of taking the first steps, with inspiration from Serena, who inspires us all to tackle the project, take the first steps and learn from mistakes. Tally Ho, ladies!

  4. I store my ornaments in a tote.

That’s a shame but I store my Christmas ornaments in cardboard boxes under my bed.

My Christmas ornaments are all in totes, with individual ornaments either in their original boxes or wrapped in tissue and put in shoe boxes! Your box is very cute though and similar to one I found at a flea market that holds my turquiose jewelry! Thank You

  7. That was a great idea for ornaments! I store my ornaments in plastic bins as well just between tissue paper.

  8. I store in plastic boxes and a few cardboard boxes, lined with Apple and /or Pear cardboard protector sheets. I found a Washington Apples box at the grocery full of the protectors they are perfect for holding round decorations. I also drop pieces of white chalk or the little bags of moisture absorbing pellets in the boxes.
Your box is very beautiful and I could using something like that for a jewelry box, not packed away in the attic most of the year.

  9. Hey girlfriend! Love it all! Nothing like being out there and the light bulb goes on! I have gotten so bad I won’t buy new! Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose! For many years our tree was covered with handmade memories. My love has turned to vintage. Our tree will be adorned with old icicles, old balls and ornaments, tinsel and an angle with lights on top! I’m a clear light’s girl. It,s all kept in plastic storage boxes and the original boxes for the balls. Loved your recent Deluth blog. Fun! Fun! Fun! Loved the wire baskets, think they where from a locker room. Our local lake still uses them!

That box is really cute. I may have to make something like that. My parents started the tradition of letting each kid pick out an ornament every year, so we’d have a little set all our own when we moved out. I forgot about it while we were overseas for a while, but after college when they moved back and we got the old ornaments out I remembered and I’ve restarted the tradition. Except I usually end up buying closer to 3 ornaments from various trips per year. That box would be a great place to keep them safe til Christmas. Right now I just store my ornaments wrapped in paper towels in those white cardboard boxes from IKEA – not the best storage method, but only a few things have been damaged so far. I tend to keep them in their original boxes for extra protection when I can!
