If there’s one thing I love doing on this blog it’s repurposing something old and discarded into something else.

Some call it “repurposing” but I like to think of it as “flexing your creativity muscle.”

I had binged on Project Runway and my absolute favorite episodes are their “unconventional” challenges, where they have to make beautiful garments out of the most unlikely thing.

So that’s what I had in mind when I saw this scrap piece of railing at the ReStore: I was going to make something cool from the most unlikely thing: Christmas DIY ornaments!

It was stuck in this pile of scrap wood.

I felt like a Project Runway designer–only, instead of making some gorgeous dress out of wood chips, I was going to make something to put in my house. LOL

I busted out my power drill and hollowed out the middle.

And then I said, “You know what would be really cool?? Not just to make DIY ornaments, but to make their own DIY ornaments keepsake box!

I still can’t believe I made this pretty little thing from scratch!!

I’m sort of like the “let’s-just-buy-boxed-cake” kind of girl. But I’m slowly becoming a “we-bakin’-this-from-scratch-yo!” kind of artist. It’s pretty exciting.

And it’s exciting to think of being able to make someone a DIY ornaments keepsake box.

I wanted to stencil the outside with snowflakes but guess who couldn’t find their stenciling materials?? ME <~~ the unorganized crafter/builder! So please excuse the lack of painted stencils! Those will come later!

But here are some other ideas on ways to embellish it:

  • Painted stencils on the front (snowflakes, “Happy Holidays,” etc.)
  • Writing a poem or the lyrics to your favorite holiday song on the inside doors.
  • Adding a decorative handle to the top so that you can carry it easily in and out of storage.
  • Adding hardware to the back and hanging it on your wall.
  • Making something like this to hang on the wall for your jewelry! 🙂

  1. I think your box could be a great way to display special ornaments or even make an advent calendar for the kids. Sooo many possibilities!! A little glitter to your ornaments would give them some “bling”. I store my ornaments in plastic bins!! You have great ideas!

Another brilliant repurposing idea! The ornaments are adorable. The box is genius. And I’m another big fan of vintage anything.

How do I store my ornaments? Usually in any random box or container I can find!! I’ve made valiant attempts to be organized in years past but generally speaking, I just want to get the job done ASAP, so organization falls by the wayside!

As I was reading this blog, I realized I’ve never owned a power tool. Then, VOILA! a contest! With power tools! I simply must win!

thirty-five years ago, I had big plans for how to store and organize my Xmas ornaments, but they have wound up being really haphazardly pitched into one of four or five big boxes! But at least I know what room they’re in!
Thanks for the lovely project, always an inspiration to see what gets done with what-nots!

  4. cute ornaments and great little box. I can see lots of uses for your keepsake box… like jewelry! 🙂

how do I store my ornaments? After about 39 years of Holidays… I have a LOT of ornaments. They are all stored in plastic totes, in their ORIGINAL packaging (the ones that came with packaging) I have always loved those sentimental favorites, but it would take at least 5-6 trees to show them all off. I use to rotate the ornaments, but then it go so hard to choose which ones to use. For the last couple of years, I have used new ball ornaments of complimenting colors. Which is a huge cop out. 🙁

I have ryobi tools, but one could never have enough when they have 2 shops they work out of, right?

  5. Hi Serena! We store our ornaments in the plastic ornament containers for the most part. We also have Hallmark ones that we add to every year which we keep in the original boxes with the year they were purchased 🙂

Thanks for the chance to win and awesome set! Nina 🙂

Oh my I forgot to leave my answer to the question of how I store my ornaments. I change the decorations on my tree every year. So I have three plastic bins full of ornaments. One is my everything tree, these are antique ornaments from my parents, and some new ornaments thrown in for good measure. Two is my red tree, as you can guess everything is red! The third, and last, is my bird tree. I’m sure you’ve seen all those pretty, clip on, bird ornaments. Some are antiques, others are new birds. I seem to pick up a few new ornaments every year! lol Like I need more! I’m outgrowing those bins! lol Talk to you soon. Love ya’

    Hey Serena,
That is an amazing, creative idea. When I saw those spindles, my mind went right to jewelry…lol It probably because that is my newest love, making jewelry. Your keepsake box would make an awesome necklace box, although I love what you did with the ornaments. Vintage knobs are also a love of mine.
Can hardly wait to hear all the tips and tricks you learned in Memphis! Love ya’

  8. The first Christmas my (now ex) husband and I spent together we had NO money. His family had given us some huge walnuts so I cracked them open, ate the nuts (of course) and glued the shells back together with string so we could hang them on the tree. We kept those walnuts for years, reminding us that creativity blooms even on stony ground!

I keep my ornaments in plastic bins now, but our family tradition was to keep them in the same newspaper and boxes, year after year. There was something very dear about unwrapping them from the aged newsprint and pulling tape from the increasingly flimsy boxes from the year before.

    1. Diane that is beautiful! What a great story and tradition for your family. I’m about to randomly select a winner for the prize pack. Good luck!

  9. MW from Maine says:

Nice job! Love the box like the knobs. Again thanks for sharing

  10. I usually just store my ornaments in one of those plastic storage bins. I love your spindle ornaments and keepsake box.
