DIY Photo Collage on Wood Using Photo Transfer Medium

Today’s DIY photo collage on wood using photo transfer is brought to you by RYOBI Power Tools. All opinions, project ideas, and thoughts belong to Thrift Diving.

I love this DIY photo collage on wood that I created on my wall recently!

But let me explain to you how ironic this is: I’ve got at least 100,000 pictures and videos of pictures stored digitally, and only a handful of the pictures are printed. My walls are generally pretty bare, actually.

Isn’t that insane??

I’m the woman who snapped so many pictures at a family gathering once that distant relatives at the event had thought I was from the local newspaper (not kidding; this actually happened).

But getting them off of the camera and out of the external hard drives is something at which I have sucked.

This month, though, I’m beaming over my latest RYOBI Nation project: a DIY photo collage on wood using photo transfer medium!

(Click here to get the full-tutorial for this project).

I am a RYOBI Nation Partner and at various times throughout the year, I get to collaborate with them on projects that force me to think outside of the box while using power tools.

So this month, the challenge was to think of creative ways to display my pictures.

As much as I love thrift stores, thrift store picture frames weren’t creative enough.

I’ve got a lot of scrap wood lying around, so I decided to try my hand at photo transfer onto pieces of that scrap wood.

The result is a fun little photo collage on wood!

Since I have never done a photo collage on wood before, especially using photo transfer medium, I struggled a little bit. LOL

But overall, I’m pleased that I was able to create a wall that included all the people I loved: my husband, kids, mom, sister, niece, nephew, grandfather, brother-in-law, mother-in-law, and even my best friend, Hakimah. 🙂

I am sure I left a few people out, but that’s what great about having a big wall and using scrap wood–I can expand it very easily!

I have a smart TV that does a slide show of pictures for me. So really its just me taking pictures off one device and putting on another but they are being displayed so maybe counts? When family are over they love to watch and brings up a lot of great story’s. Thanks for all your hard work Serena!

  2. To be honest, I actually haven’t taken my favorite pictures out of my electronics yet. We’ve been in our house for almost a year now and there’s pretty much nothing on the walls yet ?
I love this idea, though! I can’t wait to try it out!

    1. I forgot to mention…thank you SO MUCH for doing this awesome giveaway, Serena! Congratulations in advance to the blessed winner!

  4. I want to say thank you to all who left messages – it’s great reading what each of you do (or don’t do LOL). I hope to do some of this when I’m off at Christmastime!

  5. I like to repaint frames to match my decor and I usually do a collage of pictures. Usually family pictures and things that I love interspersed together.

I really like this wood transfer idea for displaying our sepia toned heritage photos! I have created a collage wall of family photos by uploading and ordering 5×7 and 4×6 prints from several of our combined Facebook albums. I purchased several wooden picture frames from the thrift store and spray painted them all in oil rubbed bronze. I matted most of the photos with inexpensive 8 x 10 white matting (with 5×7 opening) that I found on Ebay.

Absolutely love this project!! My problem is working with power tools. Not all of them, but the ones needed for this project. For me I would take the easier route and purchase already cut pieces!! Unless there’s a great tutorial on how to use these tools!! Never heard of this technique, always looking for new and exciting ways to do anything crafty etc.
My photo idea, which I did years ago on an old wood coffee table was a “photo” coffee table. I used the actual photo!! I had doubles!!! So I painted the table first, then decoupaged the pics on. ” My Family” table for the ” family room!” Couldn’t get a good photo but here it is… I also bought a piece of heavy “lucite like” cover to protect the pics and table!!!
I’m having a hard time trying to get my photo in this comment section so I guess I’m going to have to send in an email to you.

  8. Unfortunately, I still have most of my pictures on hard drives or on my phone. Those displayed in my home are from YEARS ago. I really would like to do a gallery wall going up the stairs, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I love this photo transfer idea! It would be fun to do one of a family photo this Christmas and one for each subsequent Christmas. The frames could be painted festively, and we could use them as decorations each year!

  9. Wow! What a creative idea!! I’m going to put this one on my gift list.

  10. I print out several pics, glue them to a large piece of wood (glue mixed with water so that they become translucent) – dry and hang them on the wall !
