I have a confession to make: I’m a cheap mom. I think the reason I am cheap is because my kids are so fickle. Buy them a toy and they’ll play with it for one afternoon. Let them create a toy out of cardboard and string??–then it’s their favorite thing all week. Seriously.
So, over the years, I’ve taken to not buying my kids much of anything. Instead, I’ve come up with cheap ways to entertain them, too. They’re having a good time, without me having to spend much!
Here are 5 clever ways to entertain your kids that you may not have thought about.
5 Clever Ideas to Entertain Kids for NO MONEY
1. Play “Mushroom” With a Fitted Bed Sheet
This is my favorite idea! “Mushroom” is a game I made up and we’ve been playing for years!
1. Take a fitted bed sheet (best when you’re making your bed after doing laundry).
2. Fling out the fitted sheet, trapping air inside because of the elastic sides, creating a “mushroom” of air.
3. Yell out “MUSSSSSHROOOOOOOM”!
4. Have kids jump on it!
Just be careful to only have one kid at a time jump– otherwise you’ll butt heads!
Here’s a short clip of my kids and me playing “Mushroom”! See how it works:
2. Make Rainbows with Old CDs
Every kid loves rainbows. Grab an few old CDs you don’t mind kids scratching up, and shine them on the ceiling when the sun is reflecting on them. Makes crazy insane rainbows that will “wow” your kids!
3. Give them Glo Sticks, Then Photograph Them!
Ok, so you might have to buy the glo sticks for this one. But get a pack from the Dollar Store. Let them go crazy with them while the lights are off. I heard about this idea of Glo Sticks in the bathroom on Pinterest a couple years ago. I thought it was a pretty neat idea.
But don’t stop there.
Get out your DSLR camera and put it on a slow shutter speed and snap pics. The slow shutter will capture the light paths of their glo sticks.
Afterwards, download the pics to your computer and spend time admiring their work together. 🙂 Isn’t this the coolest?! Here’s what we were able to capture!
This is what the glo sticks look like when you photograph them:
Isn’t that so cool??
4. Make Mummy Faces
I don’t know about your kids, but mine will create anything out of nothing. Including being mummies with a roll of tape. HA! Be sure it’s the cheapie tape and not your painter’s tape or Frog tape! LOL! You’ll be made when you go to do DIY projects and your tape is nowhere to be found.
5. Make Funny Faces
My kids love this! I own a Mac, and on the Mac there’s a program called Photo Booth. It allows you to take silly pics of yourself like this. My kids could spend hours doing this is!
If you don’t own a Mac, there are fun apps that kids can download to make fun of their faces. Our favorite is Facetouch. It lets you take a pic of yourself or your kids and then add funny glasses, funny hats, wild hair, everything! The Lite version is free but limited. I think the full version is $2.99.
HA! Check out my funny boys 🙂
I crack up every time I see this pic of my son, Ohene!!! He looks like an outdated 45 year old man with that hair and glasses! LOL
