How to Clean Your Oven With No Harsh Chemicals

We moved into this house over 4 years ago and not once has it occurred to me to clean the oven. {{{insert embarrassing palm slap here}}}.

I used to think my sons’ toilets were the grossest thing in our house, but clearly, after taking on this challenge, I see that it was our oven! EEK! Be prepared to be shocked, my friends. I’m slightly embarrassed. But I also realize that if mine is gross, yours probably is a little gross, too. It’s hard to keep up with laundry, much less ovens!

Thankfully, I found a solution that helped clean it up without killing off a few brain cells from the fumes. Hope this info helps you, too!

Here’s what our oven looked like before I got my hands on it:

The HomeRight Steam Machine is my favorite cleaning tool (even for stinky little boy toilets!). I did a full video tutorial and review on my experience with the Steam Machine (which you can view HERE). It really takes cleaning to a whole new level, guys.

Check out the video to see exactly how I did it! It took about a good hour and 1/2. But the great thing is that I could do it with my kids nearby and had no worries about harsh chemicals while cleaning out the grimy oven!

I used the wired brush attachment that comes with the Steam Machine, and while it did a great job…

….it got a little gunked up because my oven was so dirty! LOL.

This metal bristle attachment also does an amazing job of cleaning grout lines, too! Hubby and I own a townhouse rental and this past summer I was getting the place ready for the new tenants. The kitchen tile was gross, but that little attachment, with all the steam, brought it back to life and saved me time and money by not having to re-grout it.

But anyhow, here’s my stove! Not perfectly clean (because I gave up after awhile–it was Valentine’s Day, after all….), but a huuuugge improvement!

  2. I ordered a steam machine because of you! I love thrifting as well and loved the fact that you used your steam machine to clean your thrift items. But, first thing I am going to do when I get my machine is the oven!

  3. It looked like the steam would spray all over the floor and cabinets, did you have to clean them after??

    1. Not really, Rose! Yes, it does run a bit because it’s steam, but it doesn’t make a huge mess. The way that it cuts through the grime, it’s worth it! 🙂

We’ve been our house now for 8 years and my stove still looks brand new…but of course that’s because I don’t really cook in it. I have a stove in my house because it came with my house and it’s great for storage so I decided to keep it. I raised 4 boys, my son and three step sons and I use to cook three meals a day 7 days a week. So I decided to retire from cooking once they were all out on their own. But I’m a big fan of that steamer and with the right attachment it works amazing in the bathroom too!

    1. Smart move, Adrian! That’s a lot of cooking for such a big family. But yes, it works wonders in the bathroom! I love it for toilets! I have separate brush attachments for bathrooms and for kitchen! 🙂

  6. I purchased a steam cleaner recently but didn’t have the nerve to go up against my dirty oven, which by the way looks just like yours. You are not the only one. This post has inspired me to tackle it. Thanks for posting this.

My cleaner does have the mop attachment and I love it (McCulloch MC-1275 Heavy-Duty Steam Cleaner). I use it to clean my tile floors and windows and it’s amazing how much cleaning you can do with little effort. The only drawback is I have to wear ear plugs the whole time when using it and sometimes my ears ring after.

    1. Hey Debbie! Yep, sometimes I have to wear ear plugs with the Steam Machine, too! All that power–our little eardrums can’t take it! LOL. Thank God for STEAM! 🙂 Thanks for commenting and good luck on keeping the dirt at bay!!!! 🙂

  7. Hmmmm… I might just have to get one of those machines. Hubby would love it.

    1. Oh, you would LOVE it! They have another version, the Steam Machine Plus which is the mop version and have the attachments to use in a similar way as this one. But I think the steam mop functions best just as a steam mop, and this one functions best as the steam cleaner with the attachments.
