Last week someone called me obese.
Me…..at 5’10” and 170-ish pounds….
My face still glows a little hotter at how mortified I felt. And I couldn’t even raise hell, or even spit out an equally embarrassing insult, because the guy who said it didn’t even realize he’d stuck his foot in his mouth.
You see, a friend and I were talking to a man who was here in the U.S. attending our work conference. He was here from Paris, France. My friend joked how all the French must secretly talk about us “fat Americans.”
The guy, a medium-build Filipino man, smiled and cordially said, “Oh no, we don’t think that! However, in France, they are pretty small. Anyone with a Body Mass Index over 25 they consider obese. They consider me to be obese.”
Clearly, he was not obese. He wasn’t stick thin, but he looked average size, according to my American eyes.
Then he pointed to me and said, “And you…..They would think you’re obese, too.”
Umm……GASP! What?? Did he just really say that??
I mean, I know that I’m 20 pounds heavier now after having my latest baby 2 years ago…….
….that my belly is pudgy…. you can blame that on three cute little boys, weakened ab muscles, too much fattening granola….and round-the-clock snacking.
But obese?? Nah….
I didn’t even know what to respond, other than “Well….thanks.”
As I stood there, mouth gaped open, my face burned hot (and I’m not one that easily gets embarrassed….). But this…..to be told that you’re large enough for another country to slap the label “OBESE!” on you, was actually pretty mortifying.
Why Am I Telling You This?
I’m not so naive that I would let a total stranger shame me into turning myself into my latest DIY project. 🙂
(Actually, little did this man know that I was already on Day #9 of my healthy quest to drop 20 pounds of fat….)
But him telling me that I am considered OBESE according to French standards only fueled me to keep up the healthy habits I already started about 2 weeks ago (tracking calories, walking daily, and drinking a whole gallon of water per day).
The truth is that I have let myself go.
You don’t see behind-the-scenes of Thrift Diving, but it’s a struggle to pull together posts and projects when you’ve got a full-time “day job” and three kids. Working a “day job” in front of a computer all day….coming home to take care of little boys with my husband, and then starting a blog post or DIY project at 9 p.m. and working until 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m……Throw in some snacking and sitting on my booty all day, and you’ve got a recipe for a health disaster in about 5-10 years!
Do you struggle with being busy like this, too? Trying to squeeze it all in in a single day, then making excuses as for why we’re not healthy and fit?
We spend all this time transforming and decorating our homes, but how much time do we spend on transforming ourselves??
If you’re like me, very little.
Until now, that is. Time to do something about it, you guys!
The Real Reason This Matters
My father died of a heart attack at age 48. Not only that, name any disease, my family tree is drenched in it: heart disease, diabetes, cancers out the ying-yang of every sort, high blood pressure, and even Alzheimer’s…and the list goes on and on.
I may “only” be 36 years old, but I’m convinced that every damaging thing we’re doing to our bodies in the 30’s doesn’t show up until the 40’s.
I’m trying to live a long, healthy life for my little cuties. 🙂
As much as I love DIY, it’s time to DIY myself for a change!
What better way than on Thrift Diving, where I’ll be looking for cheap, inexpensive ways to get fit and healthy without spending a lot of money! Who’s with me????
