You want to know the reasons why our homes go undecorated, with corners of clutter, outdated curtains, and wallpaper that looks like the 70’s could call any moment, asking for it back?
It’s because sometimes we don’t have vision. Or time. Or better yet–money to make it happen!
But 1 month ago, I got sick of doing nothing about it, so I put out a call to action to my readers to join me in a 30-Day June Room Challenge. We were going to stop the decorating procrastination and clutter. Instead, my readers and I were going to focus and challenge ourselves to tackle just one room or space in our house for a full 30 days!
And now……we’re officially on Day #26!!!!
The minutes are ticking by, and some of us are scrambling to finish as best as can!
But here’s one reader that took the challenge and has probably earned the title of “Most Thrifty Makeover!”
Robin’s $25 Master Bathroom Makeover
Yes, you read that right. Robin did this whole master bathroom makeover for a measly $25!!!
Robin found Thrift Diving on a blog post over at the awesome Thistlewood Farms blog (hi, Karianne!). She signed up for the June Room Challenge and admitted that while her master bathroom looks nice and is clean and tidy, the color was way-dated and un-interesting. The color no longer complemented her bedroom/lounge area, either. She wanted a project that was manageable.
What’s awesome is that her husband was all on board to help her but she told him, “Nope, I’m going to do it all myself!” even though she claims she’s “not a painter.” Well done!
Robin’s bathroom looks great!! The color is soooo pretty! She had found the paint for a few years in the “Oops!” section, so this was no cost to her for the Challenge! And just to think she was sitting on this pretty paint for so long….
Can you believe she found the mirror (and the new shower curtain) at a yard sale for $7.00 total??!!
She wanted a lighter vanity…..
And when you peek in the bathroom, you see it’s now painted white! Great job, Robin!
What Was Your Biggest Challenge?
I asked Robin what her biggest challenge was in this makeover, and here’s what she had to say:
The biggest challenge was painting the walls. Painting always looks easy (when hubby does it)….and I really learned that it.is.not! =) The easiest part was painting the grout, believe it or not. While painting the vanities (one was adjacent to the bathroom in our bedroom) white, I spilled some paint (who’d have guessed?!) on the floor. When I wiped it up with a damp rag, it came right up but the paint that had oozed over in to the grout, stayed and stained the dingy brown grout back to white! Cool beans!! So, one day I merely used a chisel shaped sponge brush and painted the grout lines, wiped up any off the tiles and in 20 minutes, the floor looked new! So easy, so transforming, so effortless. ~Robin
Paint Your Grout!
Yep, Robin actually painted her grout! You know the grout that gets gunky brown and you can’t bring it back to white for the life of you? Robin used regular white latex paint to freshen up her grout. What a genius idea!! I mean, I knew they sell grout pens, but they’re usually expensive. Just use white paint! You can thank Robin for that tip! 🙂
The shower curtain was going to have to go, too.
She picked up the shower curtain at a yard sale, and borrowed a clock from another room to place the old one! I love that shower curtain!!
“Has This Challenge Been Inspiring? How So?”
Absolutely! Hubby offered to help me….actually he offered to paint the bathroom walls. But, there was no way I was going to pawn off my challenge, though it meant a lot to me that he was onboard. He’s so proud of me for sticking to it and pushing myself to do something out of the ordinary. I’m a good homemaker, and a great cook, and take very good care of him and my family, but to take on a whole room’s makeover isn’t something I normally do….so he’s proud, I’m proud, and one of our adult daughters saw it and went home and re-did HER teeny bathroom, too (that was actually this week)!! So, a bit of push….a bit of sweat….and I’m the better woman for it! ~Robin
Wow, Robin, your words make me so happy! I’m glad the challenge opened up some doors for you, AND the fact that your daughter was inspired, too!!
The bathroom gives off a whole other vibe now that screams — “Relax! Relax!” Or maybe “Bubble bath! Bubble bath!” :). I love it!
Simply put, this was an amazing makeover on just a few dollars. And it looks like Robin went outside of her comfort zone and tackled a whole room, which she never has done before (at least, not in such a short period of time!). Thank you, Robin!!!
So what do you guys think??!!! Leave a comment below and give Robin some kudos for a job well done!!
