Do-it-yourself (DIY) just isn’t the same after you have kids, is it? Okay, correction–everything isn’t the same after having kids.
Let’s state the obvious first: if you’re a Mom like me whose belly skin stretched out like cheap jeans from WalMart, then I’m sorry–you’ll have to join me in the “crap-I’ll-never-feel-comfortable-in-a-two-piece-again” club. (And if you’re one of those moms who popped out 5 kids and still look like a a pixie–what alien planet are you from?!).
But there are some not-so-obvious changes that happen to a DIY mom after she has kids. Here are my three handsome boys! (From L to R: Kwabena (age 7), Ohene (age 3), Kojo (turning 2 in a few days!)
The Obvious Change
BEFORE – Age 25
When you’re 25 (circa 2004) and you are a hot young thing who thinks stretch marks are for sumo wrestlers, you have no shame in your photography game. Every moment is a photo opp. And yes, you even get away with wearing peek-a-boo belly shirts because YOU CAN. And no one questions you.
AFTER – Age 35
After you have kids, suddenly, there’s a rule that the camera can’t span further south than your shoulders (unless you’re wearing black), because hey, the thought of someone even HINTING that you’re carrying Baby #4 when you’re not pregnant, is …well….mortifying. Having to tell explain to someone, “Oh….no…..I really just have a “gooch” is an explanation I’d rather not stammer through (note: “gooch,” I just learned, means “gut” and “pooch.” Thanks, Ayana!).
I’d rather just post a pretty headshot and let my Facebook friends think the rest of me looks the same as when I was 25 😉
How Your DIY Life Changes After Having Kids
You probably haven’t thought this deeply about it, but yeah, your DIY has changed, BIG TIME, since having kids. Here are just a few ways that my DIY has changed since having kids.
1. You Now Have to Sneak to the Thrift Store (or Craft Store) After Work
Remember the pre-kids days when you could leisurely stroll through your favorite thrift store or Hobby Lobby on a Saturday afternoon, taking your good ‘ole time to stop and look at everything? Now that you have kids, you have to sneak after work, hoping you’ll be home before hubby notices that you’re gone. And when you totally loose track of time and hubby calls you demanding to know why you’re not home and “What’s for dinner?!” you immediately offer to bring home food and sweets in an attempt that they’ll “forget” that you were late. (True story, yo).
2. “On the Floor” Takes on a Whoooole New Meaning
Before kids, Friday couldn’t come fast enough because you had big plans to shake your tail on the dance floor. Now that you have kids, Friday night you’re on your hands and knees on the garage floor, batting away cobwebs and prepping walls with spackle and sanding. Gettin’ down and dirty is quite literal now. HA!
3. Home Depot Makes You Salivate
Before you had kids, you got excited when you hit the mall and saw Nordstrom just over yonder. Clothes! Shopping! Looking cute! BOYS…..Now that you have kids, there’s something about those sexy orange letters when you pull into the parking lot that make you shudder in anticipation. Spray paint! Crown molding!–GASP!–power tools……. Oh yeeaahhhh….And let’s not forget the men we’re chasing at this point–the elusive Home Depot sales people (why can’t you ever find them?!)
4. Your Crafting Room Becomes a Pseudo Vault
Ahhh….the days when you could leave your crafting crap all your crafting room (heck–all over the house) and you knew it would be right where it was when you left off. But oh no. Not when you have kids. When you have kids, suddenly your crafting room become a playground for prying kid fingers, and you unsuccessfully attempt to create a vault with locks and keys and a “DO NOT DISTURB” sign, along with tons of drawers to try and hide your projects and supplies. But without a doubt, your children will come ‘a rummaging…..and suddenly yard sticks because Jedi swords….and your straight pins become mini weapons to poke siblings. Nothing in safe in your craft room. Nothing. Ever. (Did I mention never?)
5. You’re Soooo Much More Creative
So before kids, I wasn’t nearly as creative as I am now! Since having kids, I have done some of my best projects because of my boys! And for that, I am forever grateful for them inspiring me 🙂
Yes, life changes after you have kids….your projects, your patience, your priorities, aaaaannnnd your waistline….And I am sometimes envious of people that get to come home and just work on projects or blog, instead of having to feed children and wipe dirty butts. But you know what?? I’m so thankful for my three handsome boys! And I wouldn’t change that for nothing!
So how did your DIY life change after having kids?
