As much as I love thrift stores, I hate the smell of them.
Even though my nose usually adjusts after a minute, I never truly forget that the unpleasant odor exists. It lurks in the clothing, too.
Which is why I equally hate trying on thrifted clothes before buying them. But I don’t like to waste money on ill-fitting clothes, even if they’re only $3 a piece. So I swallow my pride and manage my heebie-geebies.
Plus, usually the smell of “total score!!” eventually overrides my impulse to douse myself in hand sanitizer.
And sometimes I try things on just to make a fool out of myself. But I digress…….
Looking Fly in July $25 Thrifted Outfit Challenge
Earlier this month when the 30-Day June Room Challenge ended, where my readers and I challenged ourselves to make over just one room in our house in just 30 days. I was pooped.
I didn’t have the energy to jump into another home improvement project right away, but I loved the idea of a “mini challenge” while my readers and I prepped for our 30-Day August Upgrade Room Challenge. Plus, I was inspired by (June Challenge) Meg’s amaaaaazing outfit that she lucked out in finding at the thrift store! (see her outfit below).
I stopped at the thrift store and–GASP!–found this outfit that I LOVE! It was only $10!! I had found the shoes for $5.00 at some other time (not at a thrift store), but I’ll include them since they’re technically part of the outfit. (Oh, and my earrings were $5 too, but let’s not get picky, shall we?)
Shoes: $5.00 (found a different time)
Grand Total: $14.98
Watch the Video!
Here’s the video I filmed of me shopping for this outfit! Plus, you get to see inside my favorite thrift store, which is like a massive warehouse!
Meg’s Kerry Washington Knock-Off
When you hear about all the details Meg did to pull off this outfit, you’ve got to appreciate her creativity. She saw this outfit Kerry Washington was wearing and fell in love with it. She knew she could create it herself, with thrift store clothing and some arts and crafts.
She stopped off at the thrift store, with her 3-year-old running in and out of the racks, but the fates aligned, and she quickly scored the top and skirt for just $7.00. I find it amazing how when you’re looking for the perfect thing, the thrift store is like some Fairy Thrift Mother that magically makes that THING you wanted appear out of blue. LOL. I’m serious!! Doesn’t that ever happen to you, too?! Happens to me all the time.
Get this– Meg used craft paint to make the splatters on the skirt…..and she used a pair of old black heels she already had, and painted the shoes!
WHHAATTT! I’m impressed!
GRAND TOTAL: $7.00 (not including paint)
Lawrence’s Stylish Pin Strip
Seriously, how did Lawrence pull this off, for a mere $23.45?? Lawrence always dresses so stylish. But I guess he has to, since he’s a style consultant for men. I happened to “meet” Lawrence (on Twitter??) maybe a little over a year ago. I can’t quite remember. You know how time flies in the blogosphere….
Anyhow, he submitted this sharp outfit, and you won’t believe the figures:
Vintage Blue Pinstripe Suit: $20Pink French Cuff Shirt: $1.95Pink, Blue and White Plaid Nautica Tie: $1.00Gold Tie Clip: $.50Vintage Burgundy Johnston & Murphy Tasseled Loafers: Free!! (Traded for a thrifted suit he already owned with another local thrift shopper) . <~~GENIUS!!!!

Lulu’s 50th High School Reunion Outfit
When Lulu sent me this pic of her thrifted outfit, the first thing I noticed were her amazing legs. Is that weird of me?
Seriously, they look so shapely and fit! I told her that when I’m in my 60’s, I want to be just as fit and active as she is! She still runs, hikes, and watches her calories. I love seeing people take care of themselves, no matter what age! She’s a great example that with discipline and commitment, you can look and feel great your whole life 🙂 LOVE THAT!
So on to her outfit. 🙂
Shoes: $6.50Leggings: $3.00Top: $1.75
GRAND TOTAL: $11.25
Erica’s Sassy Outfit
Erica sent me this picture for the challenge of her $15, outfit. Umm…..$15?? She looks pretty dag-on cute for having only spent $15! And I love her hair. You know, I’m kind of partial to curly hair…. ;). And I love the little cuff at the bottom of her jeans. That always looks so feminine and pretty to me.
Every piece of Erica’s outfit came from CHKD Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter (I’ve never heard of them. I wonder if they’re national?).
GRAND TOTAL: $14.97
Johanna’s Fiesty Dress
Dresses are my favorite thing to pick up from the thrift store! They’re usually no more than $10 at the most, and paired with the right shoes, is an instant outfit without too much fussy-fussy pieces. Johanna did a great job of finding an awesome dress, too! She picked up this BCBG Max Azria dress and Steven Madden shoes at her favorite thrift store. Then she gave me some attitude in this “late night artsy farsty photo shoot” (her words, not mine! LOL). I love the fierce and feisty look she’s giving. Wooooork, Johanna!
GRAND TOTAL: $17.95
Great find, Johanna!
Beth’s Fun Outfit
It makes sense to buy things that can be born in several ways. Beth, a fellow Challenger here at Thrift Diving, did just that–she found this $4.00 thrift dress and dressed it up with 2 separate looks. Super smart! She’s really cute, isn’t she? And shy, too 😉
Outfit #2 ($15.50)
GRAND TOTAL FOR TWO OUTFITS: $18.50
GRAND TOTAL: $14.77
Okay, Back To Room Makeovers……….
Shopping and talking clothes was fun while it lasted. Now it’s time to get back to what my readers and I have been doing here at Thrift Diving: room makeovers! And lots of them. Today marks the beginning of our 30-Day August Upgrade Challenge! There are over 70 people signed up! Not all of them will follow-through. That’s just how it is. But I bet you about 30-40 of us rock this challenge and transform a room in our house in 30 Days! I’ll keep you posted….
Do you have an awesome thrift store outfit that you want to show off? Leave a comment below what you found! (Or, email me a pic of you rockin’ that outfit, along with how much you paid for each piece, and I may feature you here!! 🙂
