Upcycle a Wood Wine Box into a DIY Knitting Kit

Some of my favorite projects are ones where I can take one thing that was used for one purpose, and upcycle it into something totally different. It’s so rewarding, isn’t it??

So what would you do if you passed this  vintage-y $5.00 wood wine box?

You’d snatch it up quick because you know that it would look AH-mazing as a knitting kit, even with stretch bands to hold skein’s of yarn!

I just have that kind of luck at the thrift store. This was perfect for my niece, who I wanted to make a knitting kit for her for Christmas. I love DIY homemade gifts!

The body of it was interesting, but stained and not attractive at all. I knew that if I mod podged some pretty, vintage-y scrapbook paper, it would look even better. (You can buy Mod Podge here). I prefer the Matte version because the glossy Mod Podge looks too….well….glossy :).

I used a foam brush to apply it.

This is the paper I used. After Mod Podging the paper down, I just applied a layer of Mod Podge over the paper.

And the inside was perfectly suited for some yard and knitting needles 🙂

It went from holding wine to holding a skein 🙂

Great idea with perfect result! I don’t knit so I would remove the top handle, add a strap from one side to the other and use it as a purse.

LOVE it!! Super cute!! I would have also grabbed it and put it in my garage with all of my other projects in waiting, until I came up with the perfect idea!! Love what YOU did with it!!

    • Thanks, Kathy!! It was such a fun and quick easy project! And she loved it. AND it didn’t cost a lot of money to do, which is why I am thinking I want to use thrift stores to create some really cool stuff this year. Thanks for commenting!

Knitting is a craft in which two needles along with thread or yarn are used to create fabric pieces or garments by creating loops in the yarn. Knitting can be used to create many types of fabric, from framed knitting artwork to sweaters, afghan quilts, throws, blankets, mittens, or even bedroom slippers.;`:*
