Mich’s son’s room hadn’t been updated in 12 years. WOW….Well, then this 30-Day August Upgrade Room Challenge was perfect for her!
Here’s what her son’s room looked like before she started.
Wow, what a big boy room!!
In Mich’s Own Words
“This was my son’s room. A bright and cheerful room that doesn’t get much natural light. It’s not been updated in 12 years shamefully!
We had to strip wallpaper and undercoat and paint walls primarily.
The room is 2.8m x 2.7m including the built ins so as he is 6” now and wanted a double bed I had to think hard how I would fit it! I drew it onto graph paper and moved the bed around and I had no choice – the wardrobe doors had to go! Now what!? I already had a white blind on the window to minimize room taken but another would start to look ridiculous. I found a blind for only $30 in a nice rich brown – it worked!! (I hope)
The rest of the things I already had, including the wall paint and primer (due to the brightness of the colour being covered). Jack loves it! I’m a happy little Vegemite 🙂
I had to have some sort of child thing so there are glow in the dark stars on the ceiling. All over actually, my neck is still crooked from placing them hehe. But they really look amazing when the light is turned off. I tried but couldn’t get them to show up in a pic for you so you’ll have to trust me on that one.”~Mich
“I bought a second hand bed frame for $10 and a new mattress of course (which blows my budget – can I not count that? Lol). Then I bought the shelves from a cheap shop on sale for $15, and the desk was $45 from Kmart. The chair was a curbside pick up. The rest we already had, including the paint. Oh and I made the black shelf from bits I had lying around in the shed. Total $110 plus mattress $200. (The posters I had framed and gave them to my son for his birthday at the start of the month. They were $110 for both as a present.”
“I had some LED lights from IKEA that I bought years ago for a glass cabinet and never fitted them. So I put these under the black shelf for lighting for his homework/study. You can’t even see they are there. I’m very impressed with them. I also had lots of left over sticky things that hold the cables for electronics. I stuck them along the back of the desk frame for the fan and computer cables and up along the frame of the glass shelves to hold the lamp and iPod charger cables too. You can’t see any wires at all which greatly pleases me. Go ahead look! You can’t can you? Lol.”
This room looks great! Sometimes I wonder if there’s any sadness with the “making over” a kid’s room. You know….getting bigger….growing older…Suddenly, rooms don’t look as kiddish as they once did, and the toys slowly get replaced by other interests.
For now, let’s enjoy the kids and we can worry about adult rooms later! 🙂
Great job, Mich!!!
