When Maria joined my 30-Day August Upgrade Room Challenge (go see all the other completed “before” and “afters”!), I really liked her “before.” It just looked bright. Considering that my house looks like a dungeon in the spring/summer, I liked that hers seemed to get a lot of sunlight.
But yes, I could see what she would want to work on this kitchen. It needed a little help.
Here’s what it looked like about 6 weeks ago:
And after painstakingly painting her cabinets, this is what it looks like now!
In Maria’s Own Words
“I chose to paint my kitchen because it was an ugly orange color. The cabinets were in pretty bad shape and sanding them was torture since I sanded everything by hand, no fancy machines.
This was my first painting project, ever, and I did not know where to start but thanks to the internet, I managed to accomplish it. My biggest challenge was painting the cabinets. I had never painted anything before so the first two doors I painted didn’t come out as good as the rest. Also, I decided to apply a poly to make the paint last longer (big mistake). I did not realize that it was going to yellow the cabinets. The top cabinets turned out a bit yellower that the rest, and I will probably have to repaint them again sometime in the not so near future (waterbased poly didn’t work).
I did not keep track of how much it cost, but I estimate around $600 since I had to replace certain appliances. Most of the accessories I got were free! Nothing about this project was easy. It was torture!”~Maria
I feel her pain!! I once worked on a custom dresser for a client and didn’t realize the poly would turn the white YELLOW! I was sooo upset, because I had spent so much time on the piece, that it hurt to think I had to go back over it AGAIN.
Well, it’s a valuable lesson I’m sure she’ll never make again. We all have “been there ” with DIY blunders! LOL
Considering this was Maria’s first paint job, she did an amazing job! I love the pop of yellow stools! And gain, there is that gray and yellow that I love so much, just like in the other challenger, Laurie’s, laundry room!
