Yesterday I was on a mastermind call with some blogger friends of mine where we share blogging ideas. I shared that I started my 30-Day September Room Makeover Challenge.
And Kim says to me, “You know, Serena, you’re living room looks like Young House Love’s living room!”
I admit that I had never followed Young House Love, so I had no idea.
But I needed to see just how similar our two rooms looked.
When you see their living room and that brick fireplace and three row of windows, daggonit if that isn’t my family room, too!!
I was curious to see how they arranged their furniture, because I was stumped!
Maybe I could
steal borrow some decorating ideas from them!
This is what my family room looked like when we moved in. The similarity between their space and mine was uncanny!
Their living room doesn’t lead out the way mine leads to my laundry room and my basement home office that I made over for another one of my room makeover challenges.
But it still looked similar enough that I could use some of their furniture lay-out in ways I hadn’t considered!
Here’s what my room looks like today, at the start of my 30-Day Room Makeover Challenge.
(When we moved in, we removed the wood paneling, painted the brick fireplace, and left everything else).
Let’s just say that at this point, it’s the most used, but ignored, place in our home!
I Was Inspired By Young House Love
I had never considered putting the sofa over by the window the way they did. For as long as we’ve lived here, it’s been opposite the window.
But after seeing Young House Love’s living room makeover on their Home Tour page, I decided to plan out my room for a similar layout.
And this is what I came up with.
Pretty cool, right?
I’ve been using HomeStyler.com for a few years, and it’s always my favorite “go-to” site for helping to figure out room layouts. Tthis isn’t a sponsored post; I just really love the site!
But you really need measurements of your room so that you can place things accordingly in your 3D version.
The best part is that you don’t have to be a computer wiz. It’s literally drag and drop!
And HomeStyler has all kinds of furniture, pictures, chairs, sofas, bathroom tubs–you name it–to drag into your virtual room, including paint, wallpaper, etc.
I Suck at Planning!
If you’re like me, you kind of suck at planning. But I’m trying reeeaaally hard to do better!
I’m learning lately that the more planning you do up front, the less you waste in: time and money!
So the other night I sat down and opened up HomeStyler and selected the room size that fit mine the most (square room) and entered the exact measurements.
Then I laid out my room similar to how Young House Love did, with the sofa by the window.
My “BEFORE” Family Room
Here’s the room in “real life.”
PLANNING: My 3D Family Room
And here’s the 3D model of that same area:
I like that I can choose different wall treatments!
They’re more limited on wallpaper options and wood trim, but it’s still useful to see what an accent wall might look like, like my pic below. You can easily change the color of your walls. And what’s cool is that they use Sherwin Williams paint colors (so they’re real color options, not fake computer-generated ones).
I put together a little tutorial for you guys to see HomeStyler in action and how I build my 3D room.
I just can’t wait to see what my room looks like “AFTER” and to see how close the 3D model plan resembles the finished room!
