The new pillows were provided by Brentwood Homes.
You can’t tell by looking at it, but our King-size bed is on its last leg.
We bought that bed when we moved into our first condo, thinking it would last us….oh…a few years, like cheap furniture does.
Fourteen years later, we’ve screwed, nailed, put scrap pieces of wood underneath–everything imaginable–just to keep it going until we find something else and can afford to get a new King-sized mattress (OMG, have you seen the price of mattresses nowadays?!) and bed.
But not just the support of the bed has been falling apart–the bedding and pillows have gone to crap, too.
I don’t mean to “poo-poo” on my bedroom, but this is what it looked like recently.
Actually, it usually looks like this, with misshapen pillows and a fitted bedsheet that never stays put! (Don’t you hate that??)
But recently I got some new pillows and some sheets (gasp–that fit!!) and suddenly, the bed feels pretty again!
Brentwood Home (which features healthy, natural bedding products) reached out to me and asked if I’d be interested in trying out four of their pillows.
At first, I declined.
I wasn’t interested in focusing on the bedroom because my sights were set on just finishing this DIY bathroom (OMG, you guys, it’s taking forEVAH!). I hate changing focus in the middle of a project.
Plus, we bloggers get pitched things all the time, and we don’t want to post about everything, especially if it’s not something we’re interested in trying out or promoting at the time.
But when the representative responded to my decline, “I guarantee you’ll like them or I’ll eat my shoe!”…….
….that was too good to say “no” to. LOL
Would they really be that good??
Okay, sure, send them to me. I’ll give them a try!
Plus, the bed and pillows were looking pretty horrific, I’ll admit.
Hubby’s pillows were mashed and probably not the most hypo-allergenic.
Plus, with our bed being held up with makeshift screws and supports, we don’t always get a good night’s sleep due to sinking in all the wrong places.
The Helena Pillow
When I first got the two Helena Pillows, the thing I noticed immediately was that it was filled with something…..weird. LOL
Keep in mind I’m usually the $5-a-pillow kind of girl from whatever “bargain basement” I can get pillows.
And those are filled with polyester stuff that smush down so flat you feel like you’re sleeping on a pancake. HA!
These were a bit pricier, with a soft, organic cotton cover. It also had a zipper, which I wasn’t used to having on my pillows, but they allow you to add in more filling if you want a more firm pillow, which was cool.
I wondered about how you’d wash them with all that loose stuffing (which is actually all natural kapok, from a tree!), but the website says to spot clean and allow it to air dry.
(You can see I don’t get to try out fancy stuff much, huh? LOL)
How They Felt
I actually liked sleeping on these! They were soft, not too firm, and had the right amount of stuffing.
I also liked that they were pesticide-free. I buy a lot of our food organic if I can afford it, but I haven’t bought much organic stuff for the home. It felt nice sleeping on something that wasn’t unhealthy and full of chemicals.
The Carmel Pillows
They also sent two of these pillows to try out, the Carmel latex pillows, all wrapped up.
One thing I immediately noticed was that the inside 100% natural latex was like SKIN!!
I’m not kidding you.
I took them to the kids and was like, “Close your eyes! Now reach inside here and tell me what you feel.”
(They weren’t as impressed as me, but hey–they’re kids. LOL)
You’ll have to excuse my Lizard Hands in this shot, but I had to show you guys how it looked. 🙂
The other thing I noticed is that these pillows were super bouncy. It felt like springs inside the pillow! I could see how people that like firm pillows would love these.
When I compared the Helena and Carmel side-by-side, it was noticeable how different they were in fluffiness.
The Carmel 100% organic, too, but was flatter than I liked. It’s the type of pillow that molds to your head and shoulders.
If I had to choose between the two, I’d take the fluffier one. I like to siiiiinnnkk into my fluffy pillows. LOL
I’d love to use the Carmel pillows as back supports if I am reading in bed!
These things aren’t losing shape one bit.
What About Cost?
I’ll admit that I’ve never spent a lot of money on pillows, but I should. They’re something we use nightly, so why not get the best we can afford? I’ve noticed that as we get older, we wake up with more aches and pains.
Not that 39 and 40 are old….but I’m not 25 anymore. I don’t spring out of bed like I used to. LOL Getting a good night’s sleep has become more important. 😉
I think when you’re doing a bed refresh or making over your whole room, don’t forget to budget in the cost of upgrading your pillows. It’s definitely worth something to consider since they last so long and won’t squash on you! 🙂
A New Bed Soon…?
So funny how when I look at this picture of my bed with its new sheets and pillows, all I can see is how it sinks in the middle. HA!
But don’t you worry–a bed makeover is in its future!
Now that the bathroom is about to be completed, I’ll be on the hunt for a nice secondhand bed.
At least I’ll have some great new pillows for it! 😉
